Cataracts in Pakistan
Cataracts are a major cause of blindness and visual impairment in Pakistan. The Pakistan National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey estimates that approximately 570,000 adults are blind due to cataracts, and over 3.5 million eyes have visual acuity of less than 6/60 because of cataracts.
Muazzam Foundation and As-Salaam Foundation would like to extend our gratitude to all donors and our sponsors for your kind contributions. In total we managed to raise £2,500 together for the free eye camp in Oct 2024.
The Appeal at Muazzam Hospital, Jhelum
Seen as though prevalence of cataracts is higher in Punjab province, rural areas, and among illiterate individuals, we utilise the facilities at Muazzam Hospital in Jhelum. Overall we managed to examine in detail 800 OPD patients and refer 50 individuals for a cataract operation, which took place successfully. The eye camp covered 100% of the cost of all examinations, doctors fees, medication and operations.
In addition, patients requiring vision correction were provided with free eye glasses, further improving their quality of life post-camp. Moreover, throughout the duration of the camp, all attendees and patients were provided with free meals, ensuring their comfort and well-being while receiving treatment.
A Testimonial from Founder of Muazzam Hospital, Dr. Major (Retd.) Yousaf Akhtar
Doctor Yousaf said “we are very pleased to have partnered up with As-Salaam again to provide these desperate patients with the gift of eyesight. We thank all donors for their continued support.”
