Building Mentally Strong Muslims
Each call answered could be preventing a young Muslim from committing suicide, let that sink in!
We at As-Salaam are collaborating with Muslim Youth Helpline, a free dedicated helpline, run by volunteers to ensure every young person is empowered to overcome challenges they are facing. In support with MYH, we are here to listen.
The statistics are alarming, and the need is urgent. Too many young Muslims in the UK are facing a silent crisis, battling their mental health in isolation. They are our children, our siblings, they attend our Masjids, our schools, and they live in our communities. Its documented that 64% of young Muslims in the UK have reported to have had suicidal thoughts, according to a 2021 report by Better Community Business Network (BCBN) and the University of East London.
This figure reflects the prevalence of severe mental health struggles within the community, where four in five young Muslims reported having mental health issues. Key factors contributing to this crisis in the UK include:
- Islamophobia: Over 70% of those who reported mental health struggles also said they had experienced Islamophobia.
- Bullying: More than two-thirds of young Muslims reported experiencing bullying, with nearly half experiencing it at school.
- Barriers to accessing services: Young Muslims are three times more likely to seek support from friends than from professional services, often because they feel existing services lack cultural or faith sensitivity.
The Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH), are on the frontline of this crisis. The dedicated team provides a FREE confidential, non-judgmental service for young Muslims to talk openly about their struggles.
Through your support MYH can offer a lifeline of support via a range of services, including a freephone helpline, live chat, and email support. A beacon of hope, providing a safe space for young people to express their thoughts and feelings, and guiding them towards professional help.
We Need Your Help
Your urgent support is needed to keep our vital helpline running.
The demand for our services has never been greater, and the need for your help has never been more urgent. More than half of young British Muslims are battling poor mental health, and at the Muslim Youth Helpline, we are on the frontline.
We are struggling to keep up. The number of calls we receive is at an all-time high with more than 15,000 calls in 2025, and without immediate support, we cannot meet this immense demand. We have had to increase our reliance on our dedicated volunteers, to keep our lines open. This is not a sustainable solution.
With your support, we can ensure that every call is answered, support us today with any amount or become a monthly donor:
- £20 p/m could be the reason we answer one more call from a young person in distress, offering a vital moment of support and guidance.
- £50 p/m helps us train volunteers, equipping them with skills to save lives.
- £120 p/m allows us to expand our remote services, mental health workshops, and advocacy work, reaching even more young people who need your help.
Don’t let young Muslim’s suffer alone. Join this movement and the impact can last a lifetime.
We are here to provide a range of compassionate services and support to improve the mental wellbeing of young people.
