A Staggering 33 Million Affected
More Than 33 Million People Were Impacted, 90 Districts Hit, and an Estimated 8 Million People Were Displaced.
As of 18 November 2022, the Pakistan National Disaster Management Authority reported that over 1,700 people having lost their lives and at least 12,867 people injured.
To make things worse 22% of people live in extreme poverty: they survive on less than £1 per day, 23% of people are undernourished and the country has the 25th highest infant mortality rate in the world.
Pakistan’s infrastructure has collapsed with 12 million homes damaged or destroyed, 2.2 million hectares of crops destroyed, 10,000 schools damaged or destroyed and 450,000 livestock lost.
How are As-Salaam Foundation Addressing the Situation?
We are working tirelessly on the ground on two major projects:
- Project Pani – the installation of 200 water pumps and 10 solar powered wells across most affected areas
- As-Salaam Village – the construction of 80 hut houses in Sindh
The gift of water is a hugely rewardable action. ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) was asked, “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”’. [Abu Dawud].
You Can Build a Well in Someone Else’s Name
On the authority of Sa‘d bin ’Ubadah that he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Umm (mother of) Sa‘d has died, so which charity is best?’ He (saw) replied, ‘[Providing] water’. He (ra) said, ‘So [Sa’d] dug a well and said, “This (well) is for Umm Sa‘d”’. [Abu Dawud]
Ramadan is a time when we remember our loved ones who have passed away, and many of us want to give Sadaqah Jariyah in their name during this blessed month. In the above hadith, the Prophet (saw) recommended water as the best charity to give in someone’s name. Every time someone breaks their fast using this water; every time someone wears the clothes washed with that water; every time someone eats a vegetable grown from that water – both of you will be rewarded for that.
